The collection documents farmers' politicization during the mid-1980s farm crisis and their political activity in response to agribusiness, environmental questions in agriculture, and economic hardship. Included are files of grassroots rural organizations which formed in response to the 1984-1985 farm crisis, notably Prairiefire Rural Action, the Iowa Farm Unity Coalition, the Iowa Peace Institute, and the Family Crisis Support Network in Atlantic, Iowa. O'Brien's involvement in national and international organizations is documented by files of the National Family Farm Coalition, the Women's Alternative Economic Network, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Association for Women in Development, and the Women, Poverty, and Economic Power Program. Topical files include material on rural cooperative development, sustainable agriculture, the bovine growth hormone, contaminated grain, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), organic agriculture, and national health care.
